Water Quality Sensor Responses to Injected Contaminants in a Chloraminated Pipe Loop
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 09/01/2006

Document Format: PDF

Description

This slide presentation outlines a study on water quality sensor responses to injected contaminants in a chloraminated pipe loop. Chloraminated research consisted of: all previous sensor response studies wereperformed in a chlorinated pipe loop;a subset of those contaminants wereinjected into a chloraminated pipe loop;chloramines were made by addingchlorine and ammonia to Cincinnati tapwater (4:1-5:1 Cl2:N ratio);total chlorine was maintained atapproximately 2.0 mg/L at pH 8.4 in theloop; and, grab samples indicated total chlorine wasmostly monochloramine. On-line standard waterquality test parameters are given, along with the injected contaminants (1-4 mg/L); contaminant injection; free chlorine vs. chloramines:nicotine, wastewater, Round-Up (Glyphosate), Real Kill (Malathion), TOC in both systems: wastewater, Round-Up (Glyphosate), Real Kill (Malathion). Results indicated that: TOC was the best indicator ofcontamination in chloraminated water;largest response to the most contaminants;total chlorine in a chloraminatedsystem is not a good trigger parameter; and, emphasizes the importance of TOC inon-line water quality monitoring. Includes figures.
