Ozone Oxidation of Chemotherapy Drugs and Pharmaceuticals during Drinking Water Treatment
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2009

Document Format: PDF

Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of pharmaceuticals/personal care products (PPCPs), endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), and pesticides as emerging contaminants. Study objectives were to: assess the potential of molecular ozone and hydroxylradicals OH to oxidize 7 target compounds; assess the impact of water quality on ozone efficacy;determine if benchscale results could be used to estimate full-scale removal data; and, evaluate whether one target contaminant could be used as a surrogate to evaluate ozone efficacy against organic tracecontaminants. The methodology included: target compounds of caffeine, progesterone, medroxyprogesterone, norethindrone, levonorgestrel, and two cytostatics – cyclophosphamide and methotrexate. Analysis was done by onlineSPE and LCMS/MS, with two types of water (pH = 8.10) -ultrapure water and natural filtered water. Reaction rate constants are presented, along with ozone oxidation, and full-scale results for caffeine. Includes figures.
