Sensor Network Design for Drinking Water Distribution Systems to Help Maintain Water Quality
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2008

Document Format: PDF

Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of research motivation, understanding the mechanisms driving fate and transport ofcontaminants in distribution systems is critical for water securityapplications in order to:assess the public health and economic impacts of contamination incidents;improve detection methods;design contamination warning systems;decontaminate distribution systems; and, evaluate the performance of mitigation technologies. TEVA-SPOT Sensor Placement Software is presented, along with modeling arsenic oxidation/adsorption, and modeling E. coli. Presentation challenges include the following:contaminant fate and transport in drinking water- limited experimental data ondisinfection reactions,adsorption/desorption rates, attachment to biofilms; complex ecosystem, natural organic matter, corrosion products on pipe walls, andvarious pipe materials throughout the system. Includes figures.
