Disinfection Byproduct Degradation in Distribution Systems
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2006

Document Format: PDF

Description

This paper discusses the results of past and ongoing research to investigate disinfection byproduct (DBP)degradation in distribution systems. Two projects nearing completion(one funded by AwwaRF and one funded by the National Science Foundation) wereperformed to investigate abiotic DBP degradation pathways and kinetics, with particularemphasis on the role of iron metal and iron corrosion products, as iron pipes arecommonly found in distribution systems in the U.S. and elsewhere. In addition, a newAwwaRF project is underway to investigate the biodegradation of haloacetic acids(HAAs) in distribution systems. The experimental approach includes relatively simpleglass bottle batch experiments, batch experiments in novel pipe reactors, and a survey ofwater utilities. Includes 20 references, table, figure.
