The Effects of Power Quality on UV Disinfection: Will it Kill UV Disinfection?
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/02/2003

Document Format: PDF

Description

UV lamps may lose their arc if power quality (PQ) anomalies occur and have significant restart timesafter these PQ anomalies. Common water treatment processes are not as sensitive to these fluctuations inPQ; therefore, water treatment plants (WTPs) may not be aware that their PQ will cause significantproblems with UV disinfection equipment. In addition, currently there is not a significant knowledgebase on how prevalent these PQ problems may be in WTPs. This paper presents preliminary results froman American Water Works Association Research Foundation (AwwaRF) project that is evaluating PQ andits effect on UV disinfection that observed between one and 77 PQ events each month. Even with thesePQ events, this WTP can potentially meet the draft US Environmental Protection Agency requirements limiting off-specification, whichhave been proposed for unfiltered systems and may be extended to WTPs by their state regulatoryagencies. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
