Application of the Fe/Pd Metal Complex in the Dehalogenation of Trihalomethanes
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/2000

Document Format: PDF

Description

The iron-palladium (Fe-Pd) bimetal complex has been previouslyshown to effectively dechlorinate polychlorinated byphenyls (PCBs) and chlorinated hydrocarbons under anaerobic and ambient conditions. This bimetallic complex has demonstrated ideal catalytic properties while successfully dechlorinating organic molecules under a low oxygen environment. This research explores the possibility of using the Fe-Pd complex to remove trihalomethanes (THMs) under aerobic conditions. Two columns simulating mixed-media rapid sand filtration were devised to determine the efficiency of the bimetal complex under ambient atmospheric conditions. In order to optimize dehalogenation conditions, the effects of pH and temperature were evaluated on the removal of THMs in the presence of Fe and Pd traces in the column effluents. Includes 19 references, figures.
