Development and Implementation of a Protozoa Data Review System
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/2000

Document Format: PDF

Description

The Information Collection Rule Supplemental Surveys (ICRSS) were designed tosupplement the ICR with more reliable information on protozoa occurrence. One ofthe challenges of the ICRSS was to produce reliable protozoa data of knownquality for more than 2000 field samples and more than 1000 quality control (QC)samples. A system was needed to: collect data from the analytical laboratories;review the data to ensure that method requirements were met; verify that the dataprovided to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was accurate; and, report data with standardized QC qualifiers to enable the end users to screen outquestionable results. During the ICRSS, two main tools were used to meet theseprotozoa data review challenges: standardized data reporting forms; and aprotozoa results database developed specifically for use with data generated byprotozoa Methods 1622 and 1623. Standardized sample traffic reports, benchsheets, and report forms ensured that the utilities participating in the ICRSSand the laboratories analyzing samples reported all of the required data in aconsistent manner. The Supplemental Surveys Protozoa Database performed allcalculations involved in determining final protozoa concentrations and performedautomated checks on the data from each sample to determine whether methodrequirements were met. Such tools, which were used successfully during the ICRSSto provide reliable protozoa data for regulatory decision making purposes, shouldbe considered by others collecting and using protozoa occurrence data. Includes table, figure, appendix.
