Sub Part-Per-Billion Analysis of Bromate, Iodate, and Chlorite in Drinking Water Using a New Post Ion Chromatography Column Reaction and UV Detection
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1997

Document Format: PDF

Description

The three commonly known oxyhalide disinfection byproducts, chlorite, chlorate and bromate, each have identified toxicological profiles associated with drinking water consumption. However, accurate exposure assessment studies of these byproducts at the low concentrations typically found in drinking water have been hindered by the absence of sensitive analytical procedures for their detection and quantitation. This paper describes the application of a new, simple method for oxyhalide analysis employing existing ion chromatographic equipment with additional available accessories. A single injection of an aqueous sample having undergone no special pretreatment allows detection of iodate, chlorite and bromate through target-specific post-column derivatization. Other anions in the sample are invisible to the detector and consequently do not obscure the resulting chromatogram.
