Improving Team Performance By Understanding Individual Differences
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/2001

Document Format: PDF

Description

Basic differences in personality type can often lead to team tension andmisunderstandings that have an adverse effect on performance. An understanding of these differences can improve team performance. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator provides valuable insight into individual preferences for taking in information, organizing and evaluating that information, reaching conclusions and interacting with others. These characteristics are all very relevant to working together as a team and are described by four preference scales: Extraversion-Introversion, Sensing-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, and Judging-Perceiving. Each of these scales is described and practical application demonstrated by examples where these differences have affected team performance. Information is presented on how understanding and accepting individual preferences can improve team performance. Includes 3 references.
