Journal AWWA – Risk Indexes for Draft CCL3 Chemicals
Journal Article by American Water Works Association, 09/01/2009

Document Format: PDF

Description

To supplement the processes used for developingthe draft third Contaminant Candidate List(CCL3) and better inform decisions made by theUS Environmental Protection Agency on futureCCLs, the authors offer an evaluation tool forefficiently synthesizing, visualizing, and organizingdata for effective comparisons among contaminants.Graphical presentations of healtheffects-occurrence indexes were developed formore than 300 chemical contaminants, includingthose on the draft CCL3. A risk indexes frameworkwas then used to elucidate the extent ofavailable data, the data quality, and the underlyinguncertainties for occurrence and toxicity.Choosing the appropriate contaminant for regulationis a complex process that cannot be totallyautomated; expert judgment will always be neededat some point in the process. However, the frameworkand recommendations presented here couldhelp facilitate the process and provide direction forresearch funding. In addition, water suppliers coulduse a similar process to assess emerging contaminantsin their watershed and make appropriatetreatment decisions. Includes 21 references, tables, figures.
