Description

Efficient and robust modeling systems include acomputation module, or hydraulic solver, which is thecore driving engine for modeling packages. Conventionalhydraulic models can be used to analyze operationalscenarios for a variable-speed pump (VSP) deliveringtarget hydraulic characteristics of either the fixedhydraulic head or the desired pump flow. However, modelers must repeatedly adjust relative speed factorsfor achieving the target hydraulic performance, whichcan be a time-consuming task. This article presents anenhanced variable-speed pump (VSP) solution methodto automatically calculate the relative pump-speed coefficientfor attaining the prescribed hydraulic head orpumping the preferred amount of flow. Engineers canuse this method to model not only a single VSP but alsomultiple VSPs with rule-based logic controls. Thisallows the target control head to be specified at anylocation or for the target flow to be specified for VSPsof different capacities. The extended method provides aflexible, robust modeling approach for engineers toanalyze a variety of VSP configurations in water andwastewater collection systems. Includes 9 references, tables, figures.
