Description

Many U.S. water agencies are operating in the business-as-usual mode when it comes to sustainability. With today’s climate variability and increasingly scarceresources, utilities must look at the bigger picture; itmakes sense to align today’s decisions with our long-termfinancial, environmental, and social goals. This article outlines how one mid-sized water districthas taken simple steps to be responsible to today’s customersas well as to future generations. By acting nowto reduce toxins, save energy, and support employeehealth and safety, water utilities can save money, avoidfuture regulatory problems, and garner public goodwill.Water suppliers can apply this information in theiroperations today and in the future. Many of the stepslisted are not difficult. However, if a majority of watersuppliers took these actions, great progress could bemade in lessening the negative environmental effects andin strengthening the positive effects their organizationshave in their communities, while keeping rates affordablefor their customers.
