Virtually every aspect of water utilityoperations could be affected by global warmingand by any legislation eventually enactedto address it. This includes water resourcesplanning as well as system design, operations,water distribution, and customer service.Even the customer’s ability to payincreased water rates will be affected as thecost of living increases overall in response tolegislative mandates and regulations toaddress global warming.Large amounts of public monies will berequired to address global warming, andhuman lives are at stake. This article discusses how legislation, regulation,and water utility decisions to mitigateand/or adapt to global warming based onincomplete, incorrect, or spurious informationmay have disastrous consequences. The article stresses thata higher level of scrutiny and reviewmust be given to public statements by scientistsand politicians as well as to the academicresearch on global warming and climatechange. Includes 28 references.
