Document Format: PDF

Description

A goal of the water supply industry is to provide safedrinking water that meets the minimum standardsestablished by the US Environmental Protection Agency.Utilities have invested millions of dollars in treatmentprocesses to meet these regulations, but their investmentcan be swiftly negated by something as basic as transientpressure fluctuations, which allow a return flow ofa contaminant or pollutant into the distribution system.Utility professionals are typically not aware ofplumbing system operation details. Although manyschools attempt to teach plumbing basics to backflowprevention administrators, water suppliers are bestserved by working closely with plumbing inspectorsand licensed contractors to attain cross-connectioncontrol through plumbing code compliance. A partnershipwith the plumbing industry, that includes codecompliance, is essential when providing safe drinkingwater. A properly installed and maintained plumbingsystem is critical to prevent the introduction of contaminantsto the public supply. Includes 5 references,.
