Description
Many engineers size an ultraviolet (UV) disinfectionsystem based on design conditions of flow, UV transmittance(UVT), and lamp output, and then assessoperation and maintenance costs based on averageflow. However, flow and UVT vary among water treatmentplants and response to these variables by the UVsystem varies among equipment. As a result of thelimitations of this approach, many installed systemstoday are significantly overdosing.Simulations of the performance of UV systemalternatives that account for critical variables providethe best foundation for selecting UV systems fordrinking water applications. This article provides anoverview of UV disinfection, identifying the benefitsof applying the key features associated with dosemonitoring, validation, and design and a newapproach for integrating these factors to obtain optimaldesign. Includes 23 references, tables, figures.
