Journal AWWA – Performance of Venturi Meters Installed Downstream of Bends
Journal Article by American Water Works Association, 04/01/2006

Document Format: PDF

Description

The ability to accurately measure the flow in a closedconduit is essential for utility managers. Although recenttechnological advances have produced various types of flow measuringdevices, Venturi meters remain a popular choicebecause of their high accuracy and low head loss. Becausewater suppliers are increasingly using these meters for fiscalmetering, a Venturi meter must be as accurate as possible.Although the standards vary for different Venturi flow meters, proper installation is crucial for obtaining an accurate flowmeasurement. In this study, tests were performed to determine the effects ofa short-form Venturi meter on the discharge coefficient when thedevice was installed in piping with straight lengths shorter thanthose set forth in the standards. The tests showed that short-formVenturi meters generally perform within the desired accuracyrange, even when placed in nonideal piping configurations. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
