This article provides an overview of the top tenwater utility future trends identified through anassessment of the literature, interviews with publicwater supply community leaders, and a futures workshopfeaturing futurists and scenario planning exercises.Utilities can use the discussion of these trends,including aging infrastructure, advancing technology,climate changes, and increased security risks, asguidelines during strategic planning. On the basis ofthe findings of this trends assessment, the authorsconclude that future utilities will likely beoperationally efficient; be engaged in the community;and integrate water management, treatment, environmentalsustainability, and public policy decisions in away that leverages regional opportunities and relationshipsand economies of scale.
