This paper discusses the endocrine system, which regulates the development,growth, reproduction, and behavior of an organism. Concern has grown aboutsynthetic chemicals interfering with or disrupting the normal operation of thissystem because certain chemicals can mimic the hormones that serve as themessengers regulating the endocrine system. A three-step approach by the watersupply community to address this issue is recommended: consolidate scientificdata about the issue; evaluate its effect on specific water quality; and,communicate these findings to the public.
