Journal AWWA – Reliability and Redundancy: Dual Protection for Water Treatment Plants
Journal Article by American Water Works Association, 04/01/1980

Document Format: PDF

Description

The design of water treatment facilities should be based on the premise that failure of any single plant components will not prevent the plant from operating at the design flow and meeting drinking water standards. Furthermore, sufficient operational flexibility should be included in the design to handle a variety of water quality problems where raw water quality is variable. The principal factors to consider in water treatment plant reliability, in addition to basic reliability characteristics of the process and of the mechanical equipment, are redundancy or reserve capacity, flexibility, process configuration, gravity flow versus pumping, plant vulnerability, safety, and an adequate supply of power, chemicals, and other materials. Includes table.
