Journal AWWA – Tastes and Odors Associated With Chlorine Dioxide
Journal Article by American Water Works Association, 06/01/1992

Document Format: PDF

Description

A survey was conducted to determine practices and problems associated with the use of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) by US water utilities. The survey acquired data concerning raw- and finished-water quality as well as treatment processes. A specific emphasis of the survey was to investigate the association of adverse odors (particularly those resembling kerosene and cat urine) with ClO2 application. The results indicate that ClO2 is primarily applied to reduce the formation of trihalomethanes. Offensive odors associated with the application of ClO2 were not correlated with raw- or finishedwater quality. Odors were more intense and more diverse when ClO2 was used, and increased numbers of complaints about odors were associated with the presence of new carpets in customers’ homes. Includes 30 references, tables, figures.
