Journal Article by American Water Works Association, 05/01/1986

Document Format: PDF

Description

Posttreatment of reverse osmosis (RO) product water is usually required, regardless of the intended application, type of RO device, and the chemical nature of the RO membrane. Posttreatment requirements depend primarily on the application and must be determined on a case-by-case basis. The most frequently used posttreatments discussed in this article include complete demineralization, pH adjustment, treatment to reduce corrosiveness, disinfection with ultraviolet radiation or chlorination, and degasification to remove hydrogen sulfide. Details of these posttreatments are given for RO product waters from brackish as well as seawater sources. The costs of the treatment processes are also presented. Includes 24 references, tables, figures.
