Personal Computers in Parallel Processing Genetic Algorithm Based Models for Distribution Systems
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1999

Document Format: PDF

Description

Although recent advances in desktop computational power have encouraged evensmall water utilities to utilize simple computer models, there appears to be asignificant gap in available and required desktop computational resources for thewidespread utilization of advanced computer models. Optimal control of waterdistribution systems and optimal calibration of distribution network models aretwo problems where there is a need for significant computational power. There hasalso been a growing interest on the use of genetic algorithms for several waterresources engineering problems. While genetic algorithms are very robust andpowerful in obtaining optimal solutions, their excessive computational timerequirement has been a serious hindrance in applying this technology forlarge-scale real-life problems. One solution to this problem is the parallelimplementation of genetic algorithms on affordable personal computers. This paperreports the results of a preliminary study that implemented a geneticalgorithm-based calibration model on a network of personal computers. Includes 34 references, table, figure.
