Developments in Free-Swimming Acoustic Leak Detection System for Transmission Pipelines
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 09/01/2006

Document Format: PDF

Description

Acoustic leak detection systems have proven to be an effective means for identifyingleaks in water pipelines. Currently, there are three predominant acoustic leakdetection systems utilized. These include acoustic listening devices, leak noisecorrelators and tethered hydrophone systems. Although each system has merit, eachis also limited in its ability to cost effectively survey long reaches of larger diameterwater transmission pipelines.Recent technological advances have resulted in the development of a free-swimmingacoustic leak detection device capable of surveying more than twelve miles ofpipeline with a single deployment into a fully operational pipeline. The system canidentify and locate small leaks in large (>10″ diameter) water pipelines constructed ofany pipe material. The device can also pass through in-line valves and negotiatebends in the pipeline. These benefits provide a cost effective and timely approach toidentifying and locating leaks in water transmission pipelines. Includes 2 references, figures.
