Operating Experiences at VOC Treatment Facilities
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1995

Document Format: PDF

Description

In 1991, the Organic Contaminants Control Committee of the Water Quality Division completed a report entitled “Existing VOC Treatment Installations: Design, Operation, and Cost” that includes design and capital cost information on 68 air stripping and granular activated carbon (GAC) treatment facilities around the United States. As a follow-up to the 1991 report, the committee re-contacted each of the 68 facilities to obtain operating experiences and operation and maintenance (O&M) costs associated with the use of these technologies to remove volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) from drinking water supplies. The operation information in this paper includes actual process performance, maintenance requirements, operating problems and solutions, facility/operational improvements, and operating cost data. The purpose of this paper is to convey to the water industry actual operating experiences with air stripping and GAC processes so that previous successes may be used as models, and past failures may be avoided.
