Triple Validation Turbidimeter: A New Approach to VLT Monitoring
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1995

Document Format: PDF

Description

It has long been known that one of the best ways to prevent an outbreak of waterborne illness is to maintain very low turbidity in the process water. This point is driven home every time an outbreak occurs. Stringent low level turbidity requirements and proposed legislation are pushing the limits of existing turbidimeter designs to the point that we are looking for alternatives. Aggressive filter management can provide much lower turbidity in the area of 0.1 NTU and even lower. Consistent monitoring of Very Low Turbidity (VLT defined as less than 0.5 NTU) can be difficult. Accurate and consistent monitoring in the VLT range of 0.02 to 0.5 NTU requires a new approach to an on-line turbidity measurement. HF scientific has introduced a new process turbidimeter that has been designed to address as many of the foregoing errors as possible and either eliminate or greatly reduce their effect. The new system is called the TVT-200. The TVT-200 cleans and calibrates itself between every reading providing the most accurate reading possible. The heart of the TVT-200 is the “BOBBER” which contains the calibration standards. The BOBBER is a small, transparent sealed cylinder with three compartments. Preliminary tests indicate that the accuracy and sensitivity of the TVT-200 may provide a low cost alternative to the on-line particle counting for filter monitoring.
