Impact of Hydraulics on the Ozone Contactor Design for the Case of Giardia and Cryptosporidium Cyst Disinfection
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1995

Document Format: PDF

Description

Several parameters must be considered for the design of ozone reactors: gas-liquid mass transfer efficiency; kinetic aspects; and hydrodynamic behavior. The relationship between the reaction kinetics and the reactor hydraulics allow the performances of an existing reactor to be predicted; or the type of contactors for a new reactor, as well as its design and operation parameters, to be selected for proper attainment of water quality treatment objectives. The two extreme types of ideal flow in continuous reactors are the completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and the plug flow reactor (PFR). Existing reactor behavior, generally in between these two flow types, is modeled by a greater or smaller number of CSTRs in series. This paper illustrates the importance of the reactor hydraulics for different water quality treatment goals and presents the advantages of different contactors (i.e. conventional bubble column, PFR, deep U tube). Water treatment objectives for disinfection and oxidation of various compounds are discussed in relation to the kinetic reaction rates. The importance of the hydraulic behavior has been found to be strongly dependent on the water quality treatment objectives.
