A Linear Regression Analysis of Nassau County's Water Conservation Program
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1994

Document Format: PDF

Description

To assess the effectiveness of Nassau County, New York’s water conservation program, the effects of population changes and weather patterns on water use are screened out. Using multiple linear regression, an equation is developed to predict average monthly pumping based upon the number of households and two weather-related indexes. The first index represents degrees over 65 degrees Fahrenheit of the maximum daily temperatures totalled for each month. The second index represents consecutive days without rain, totalled for the month. A Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.95 was attained. Results indicate that the conservation program achieved a maximum one year decrease in water use of 11 percent, but results diminished once public education efforts waned.
