An Alternative Approach to Analyzing the Impact of Water Conservation Programs
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1992

Document Format: PDF

Description

The alternative methodology applied here for evaluating the effectiveness of long-term indoor water conservation programs provides reasonable estimates of the annual average water use savings. The statistical analysis of wastewater flow indicated that a linear multiple regression model is a valid methodology for analyzing wastewater flow. As additional water conservation efforts are made, analysis of these programs can provide valuable information regarding their continue effectiveness. The analysis indicated the water conservation programs implemented in the city of San Jose from 1986 to 1990 have culminated in a reduction of wastewater flows to the water pollution control plant by approximately 5 MGD. Using this approach, performance evaluations of water conservation programs can be done in terms of the tangible/intangible benefits resulting from reduced wastewater flows. In addition, water conservation programs implemented in the future can be monitored for the purposes of evaluating their impact on wastewater flows.
