Characterization of Natural Organic Matter Removal by Preozonated and Benzoate Induced Slow Sand Filtration
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1991

Document Format: PDF

Description

The paper describes the changes in characteristics of natural organic matter (NOM) which occurred in these biologically enhanced slow sand filter systems. Preozonation was intended to increase the biodegradability of recalcitrant NOM. The addition of benzoate was designed to induce the growth of bacterial populations capable of metabolizing recalcitrant aromatic NOM. Pilot scale filtration runs were conducted to determine the effects of the ozone and benzoate pretreatments. While preozonation was effective, the addition of benzoate did not significantly improve organic precursor removal.
