New Techniques for Experimental Studies of Mixing in Water Storage Tanks
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 06/01/2007

Document Format: PDF

Description

This powerpoint presentation presents new techniques for experimental studies of mixing in water storage tanks. Topics presented include: 3DLIF System for Mixing Tanks; quantifying mixing; dimensionless mixing times for cylindrical tanks with various H/D; effects of density differences; Birmingham model tests; Higdon tanks; effect of reducing the orifice size; similitude with density differences; effect of varying flowrate, 9 inch nozzle; effect of checkvalve at low flowrate; inlet modifications at Echo Lake; Shannon tanks; and, tall tanks. Conclusions were that: 3DLIF provides vastly more data on 3D unsteady mixing than other experimental techniques;it allows quantification of mixing in great detail;scale-model testing with 3DLIF is a cost-effective design technique and for testing alternatives; and, mixing can be effected simply and at relatively low cost by suitable nozzle design. Includes figures.
