Addressing Combined Nitrate and Arsenic Treatment Needs
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 06/01/2006

Document Format: PDF

Description

This slide presentation outlines a study that addressed combined nitrate and arsenic treatment needs. Project objectives were to: determine optimal approach for treatmentof both nitrate and arsenic that included combined treatment by ion exchange and independent treatment of nitrate by ion exchange andother technology for arsenic; and, optimal approach determined by brineproduction. A case study of Ripon, California is presented with the challenges of: increasing water demand;nitrate and arsenic occurrence; and, disposal of high strength brines. The pilot study description is given, along with ion exchange resins, experimental setup, and results for sulfate, arsenic, nitrate. Full-scale treatment implications included:difference between longest runtime fornitrate removal and combined nitrate andarsenic removal was minimal; and, combined treatment of nitrate and arsenicfor the City of Ripon is more optimal thanindependent treatment of nitrate by ionexchange and arsenic by an alternatetechnology. Includes tables, figures.
