The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) coordinates cryptosporidiosissurveillance for the five counties served by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. SFDPH is cooperating with the California EmergingInfections Program to gather cryptosporidiosis surveillance data in San Francisco and Alameda counties. Inthe remaining counties (San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Tuolumne), SFDPH established contact with 21laboratories to institute an ongoing, active, lab-based surveillance system. Of these, 16 (76%) originallyagreed to report cryptosporidiosis data to SFDPH, and two (10%) are reporting to California Emerging Infections Program (CEIP), for an overallparticipation rate of 86%. Three laboratories (14%) have refused to participate. Two of the laboratories thathave declined to participate are commercial reference facilities and one is a commercial lab with many localbranches. Non-commercial local laboratories served by the reference labs are participating in thesurveillance project and are serving as a proxy measure of reference lab activity. Further surveillanceinformation is obtained from the public health departments in each county. Includes tables, figures.
