California's Perspective on Xenobiotic Control
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 06/15/2003

Document Format: PDF

Description

The California Department of Health Services’ (CDHS) Drinking Water Programhas developed water quality policies that aid utilities with source water protectionconcerns, in part by increasing the awareness of others regarding the importanceof watershed protection through the implementation of source water assessmentprograms. It is recognized that once any contaminant has been released into theenvironment, water utilities and regulatory agencies will, out of necessity, cometo depend on technology to reduce contaminant concentrations to acceptablelevels. It is important to build treatment barriers to be reliable in order to ensureconsistent quality of product because they represent the only barrier between thesource water and consumer. The growing concerns and increasing costsassociated with treatment serve to illustrate the technical and economicramifications of attempting to reverse the environmental impact of past practices.
