Use of CFD to Analyze the Effects of Buoyant Inlet Jets on Mixing in Standpipes
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 06/15/2003

Document Format: PDF

Description

This paper presents CFD results of a qualitative mixing analysis of standpipes with various inletconfigurations, inlet momentum, and temperature differentials to illustrate the impact of buoyant jetson the mixing processes within standpipes. The standpipe being analyzed is a 1.5MG tank, 53 feet indiameter with a maximum water depth of 94 feet. Simulated tracer distributions are shown toillustrate the movement of fresh water being introduced into the standpipe under these variantconditions. A case study of a 1.3MG standpipe in Dennis, Massachusetts is presented. Temperaturedata was collected in 2000 and 2001, before and after an inlet/outlet pipe modification. The dataillustrates the existence of thermal stratification and its elimination after the piping modification. Includes 3 references, table, figures.
