Description
This powerpoint presentation presents the design, construction, and start-upchallenges of the Long Beach submerged seawater intake and pretreatment system. Preliminary waterquality results are provided and compared against other pretreatment methods (i.e.microfiltration/ultrafiltration membranes) used for seawater desalination. The pretreatment performance of the intake gallery is compared to otherpretreatment methods commonly used by membrane seawater desalination facilities (i.e.microfiltration/ultrafiltration membranes). With this novel approach being one of the first of its kind, several challenges wereencountered during the detailed design phase. These design challenges included:overcoming local hydrogeologic limitations (i.e. poor permeability, minimal sanddepth, etc.);impact of tidal fluctuations on operating conditions (i.e. pump head, minimalsubmergence of gallery) and water quality;fouling/clogging of intake gallery;scouring of intake/discharge gallery; and, regulatory requirements (construction impacts on marine life, constructiondewatering, maintaining public access, etc.). Includes tables.
