Full-Scale Evaluation of Mechanical Surface Aeration for TCE Removal
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1993

Document Format: PDF

Description

A mechanical surface aeration (MSA) system was installed in 1991 in an existing five-million gallon reservoir at the Arcadia Water Treatment Plant to remove volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), principally trichloroethylene (TCE) from the groundwater source. This paper presents the results of the test program for the new MSA system. The primary purposes of the testing were: to demonstrate the system’s ability to remove TCE from a softened groundwater to below its drinking water maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 5 ug/L; and to demonstrate that the vapor phase granular activated carbon (GAC) emission control system meets the local air quality management district’s emission requirements. The data obtained from these studies can be used by the plant operators to assist them in operating the MSA system.
