A Survey of Nitrification in Chloraminated Distribution Systems
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1993

Document Format: PDF

Description

Nitrification is a microbiological process by which ammonia is sequentially oxidized to nitrite and nitrate. In chloraminated systems, nitrification has the adverse impacts of reducing chloramine residual and promoting bacterial regrowth. The objective of this study was to document nitrification occurring in chloraminated systems, identify potential causative factors and indicators of nitrification to better understand and control the problem. The results reported here were collected as part of AWWA Research Foundation project “Occurrence of Nitrification in Chloraminated Water Systems.”
