Executive Summary Lead Control Strategies American Water Works Association Research Foundation
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1990

Document Format: PDF

Description

Federal regulations concerning control of lead leaching into drinking water could impact up to 53,000 drinking water supplies throughout the U.S. Because of these far reaching impacts, the AWWA Research Foundation (AWWARF) recognized the need to summarize the state of the art lead control and decided to develop guidance for water utilities. The intent of the Lead Control Strategies Project (Project) was to develop a Manual that would provide information for the water utility on how to: approach the lead problem in drinking water; select water treatment alternatives; and determine the effectiveness of lead control strategy through monitoring. Major elements of the Project include the following: review of federal regulations relating to drinking water; description of the sources of lead in water systems; description of the historical perspectives by reviewing case histories related to lead; review of the monitoring strategies including tap sampling and pipe loop systems; description of treatment strategies to reduce lead leaching; and development of examples to demonstrate use of the Lead Control Strategies Manual.
