Description

The replacement of deteriorated underground water distribution pipelines in anarrow residential street is difficult at best, but to replace these pipelines inan affluent neighborhood in La Jolla, California, on a mountain high street inwhich the street and homes are slowly sliding downhill due to the movement of alandslide is extremely challenging. This paper discusses the City of San Diego’sDesert View Drive project which showcases in-house creativity to meet thechallenges faced with stabilizing the movement of the street, designing theinstallation of flexible water connections, obtaining agreements with privateproperty owners to install these devises to restore service to their property, and developing project specifications to ensure that the construction work willnot jeopardize the integrity of the slope. This project spans a number of yearsof evaluation, litigation, failed attempts to restore service and finally adesign and installation that restored service to this area.
