Description

Pipes in distribution systems often become tubercolated, which can lead to an increase in the roughnessof the pipe wall and in a reduction of the pipe diameter. Many model calibrations allow for adjusting theroughness coefficients alone, often neglecting the reductionin pipe diameter. Such oversights can have a significanteffect on the prediction of correct flow velocity. This article explores the relationship betweenpipe roughness and effective pipe diameter. On thebasis of a series of fieldwork measurements and amodeling study, the authors make several conclusions, including: calibrating models usingchanges in pipe wall roughness to describe measuredpressure data may be insufficient to accuratelymodel the performance of the system; and, ignoringthe reduced effective diameter of the pipecan lead to incorrect predictions of hydrauliccapacity.
