Description

Data regarding water main breaks are widely consideredimportant for effective water distribution assetmanagement. This article presents the results of a surveyadministered to small and medium-sized utilities toevaluate the state of data collection practices for watermain breaks in the United States and Canada. Thesurvey included questions about the amount and typeof data collected by water utilities, the utilities’ level ofcomfort with the amount of data collected, and theavailability of data elsewhere within the utility.The survey results show that the amount of datacollected can be classified by the degree of data richnessand defined as either an expanded, intermediate, limited,or minimal data set. Analysis of the results suggeststhat utilities can implement practices to increasethe amount of data they collect and increase the effectivenessof their data collection and processing. Theresults also suggest that utilities can improve their datasets by considering additional sources of data for watermain breaks. Includes 17 references, tables, figures.
