Description
In contrast with other industries, the compositionof the water and wastewater workforce has not beenextensively quantified. No single agency surveysjobs for both public and private utilities, and informationis scattered among numerous governmentand industry data sets.In this study, data from several surveys and othersources were used to estimate total water and wastewateremployment at 250,000 and 175,000, respectively.Data on jobs by occupations indicated thatapproximately 38% of this workforce falls intoadministrative and management categories and about30% are in production occupations, three fourths ofthese as operators. Information on other technicaloccupations is presented, and recommendations aremade for policy changes in occupational statistics andtraining for utility employees.The water and wastewater workforce is large andsignificant on a national basis. A better understandingof its composition will help determine appropriatepolicy-making and workforce investment andassist utility management and certification agenciesin developing training and improvementprograms.
