Membrane Stretching: Impact on Flux and Particle Rejection
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 03/01/2005

Document Format: PDF

Description

For microfiltration or ultrafiltration membranes, both clean water flux and particulatefouling (blocking of pores by particles) are thought to be a function of the pore area and shape. Inthis research, commercial membranes have been uni-axially stretched to alter the pore shape, andtheir performance was evaluated with respect to clean water flux, flux decline when filtering asuspension, and particle rejection. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) track-etched membranes withmono-sized circular pores from 1 to 10 µm and polyether sulfone (PES) phase-inversionmembranes with nominal pore sizes ranging from 0.2 to 5 µm have been stretched in the range of12 to 150%.
