Decision Tree to Select the Appropriate Drinking Water Disinfectant
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1998

Document Format: PDF

Description

This paper describes an approach for selecting alternative disinfectants for drinking water systems. A decision tree was prepared to assist water utilities in selecting appropriate disinfectants by weighing the advantages and disadvantages of individual disinfectants and their combinations to meet pathogen inactivation requirements, maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for DBPs, and maximum residual disinfectant levels (MRDLs). The goal is to identify alternative practices that can improve the quality of the finished water. The following alternative disinfectants and oxidants are discussed: chlorine, ozone, chlorine dioxide, monochloramine, peroxone, potassium permanganate, and ultraviolet light, as well as combinations of these disinfectants. For each of these disinfectants, a brief overview of the pathogen inactivation efficiency and DBP formation potential is presented.
