Removal of THM Precursors vs. Formed THMs: A GAC Pilot Study
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2005

Document Format: PDF

Description

This slide presentation outlines information on a granular activated carbon (GAC) study to achieve the following objectives: treat California State Project Water (SPW) to meet Stages 1 and 2 ofthe Disinfectant/Disinfection Byproduct (D/DBP) Rule for Trihalomethanes (THM)4 while maintaining a free chlorine residual in the distribution system; and, evaluate granular activated carbon (GAC) as a THM precursor (total organic carbon) removal process, and asa formed THM (chloroform, bromodichlormethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform) removal process. The components of the GAC pilot plant included: 4″ column diameter;15 minute empty bedcontact time (EBCT); and, hydraulic loading (post filter: 2.0 gpm/ft2,post-clearwell: 3.0 gpm/ft2). The characteristics of GAC used during testing are given along with raw water quality. Results for the following are given: total organic carbon (TOC) breakthrough; Trihalomethanes; and, blending. Includes tables, figures.
