Pathogen Transport in Porous Media: The Role of Experimental Design, Ionic Strength, and NOM
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2008

Document Format: PDF

Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of factors impacting microbialtransport and fate in porous media. Microorganisms and surrogates studied includedC. parvum oocysts,B. subtilis spores, and4.5 µm microspheres. Experimental design included: 10cm and 20 cm length columns;column orientation – vertical and horizontal;media – composition: >99% silica, size range: ~0.2 – 1.2 mm,d50: 0.2 mm and 0.6 mm, andUC: 1.5 and 2.2;DOM: 0 mg/L and 5 mg/L;IS: 1mM and 100 mM KCl; and,Rates: 1 m/d, 10 m/d, 40m/d. Preliminary conclusions indicate the following: column design can impact observed microoganism andtransport surrogate removals by filtration at watervelocities < ~10 m/d;the presence of higher levels of NOM may counteractthe impact of column orientation (further investigationrequired); and, ionic strength can impact observed microoganism andtransport surrogate removals by filtration at watervelocities < ~10 m/d. Includes figures.
