Description
This powerpoint presentation begins by presenting “Hypochlorite – An Assessment of FactorsThat Influence the Formation of Perchlorateand Other Contaminants”AWWA WITAF #712 / WaterResearch Foundation #4147Final Report In Press. Study objectives were to: develop and/or validate necessaryanalytical methods for chlorate, perchlorate, bromate, bromide, andtransition metal ions; elucidate mechanism of perchlorateformation; quantify kinetics and rate law; pH, temperature, ionic strength, concentration, catalytic effects; develop predictive model; develop control strategies to minimizeperchlorate formation in hypochlorite solutions; simultaneous quantitation of othercontaminants and effects on kinetics for bromide, transition metal ions, and bromate and chlorate; and, occurrence studies on quantifying the concentration in bulk, on-sitegenerated (OSG), and calcium hypochlorite, and on the impacts on finished water quality fordrinking water and water reuse facilities. Conclusions indicate that: detailed chemical rate law can be used topredict perchlorate concentration in bulkhypochlorite;no observable difference between OSG andbulk hypochlorite solutions (chlorate, perchlorate, and bromate) when high purity saltsare used; and, chemical security regulation with potential U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulatory determination may have unintendedconsequences for drinking water and waterreuse systems. Includes tables, figures.
