Characteristics of Chlorate Formation in Electrochemical Process Using an Undivided Pt/Ti Electrode
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2009

Document Format: PDF

Description

The electrochemical oxidation of water containing chloride (Cl-) ions has emerged as apotential disinfection and oxidation strategy in which the mixed oxidants, such as ozone, chlorine, and •OH, are generated on-site (Kerwick et al., 2005). However, the formation ofharmful disinfection byproducts such as chlorate (ClO3-) and perchlorate (ClO4-) represents anundesirable side of this process. This study investigates the characteristic ofchlorate formation in electrochemical processes using Cl-. In detail, the effects of the followingparameters on chlorate formation were investigated: the mixed oxidants (O3, HOCl/OCl-, and •OH), dissolved organic carbon (DOC; 0, 1.5, and 2.2 mg L-1), pH values (3.6, 5.5, 7.0, 8.0, and9.0).
